Ne Zha 2 Becomes First Non-Hollywood Film to Hit $1B Globally in Single Market

Chinese smash hit Ne Zha 2 has shattered records, becoming the first non-Hollywood film to reach $1 billion globally in a single market. The animated sequel has surpassed Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing movie ever in China, with a running gross of RMB 7.58 billion ($1.04 billion) in the country’s markets.

Directed by Yang Yu, Ne Zha 2 is based on a classic Chinese myth and follows the titular boy with magical powers as he battles sea monsters to save humanity. The film has been a massive success since its release during the Lunar New Year holiday period in January, setting a new record for the biggest single-film box office in China’s history.

As of 5pm local time today, the film’s total gross is RMB 7.06 billion ($968.8 million). Maoyan has projected that Ne Zha 2 will finish with a staggering RMB 10.8 billion ($1.48 billion) in China by the end of its run.

Ne Zha 2’s success is significant not only for being the first non-Hollywood film to reach $1 billion globally but also for breaking down barriers between domestic and international box office records. The film’s performance has sparked interest in how Chinese audiences are driving global box office trends, with some industry insiders optimistic that this trend could have a lasting impact on Hollywood.

The film’s remarkable success has left many in awe, with predictions suggesting it could reach $1.5 billion by the end of its run.
