Ne Zha 2 Breaks Box Office Records with $960.5M in China

Ne Zha 2 has shattered records as the highest-grossing film in a single market of all time. The animated adventure earned $960.5 million in its domestic release, surpassing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens in 2015. Chinese box office tracker Maoyan projects that Ne Zha 2 will reach $1.48 billion.

The film, released January 29 for the Lunar New Year holiday, broke records with a single-day gross exceeding CN¥700 million (~US$96 million). The sequel to Ne Zha, directed by Jiaozi (Yu Yang), continues the story of the demon-slaying hero teaming up with Ao Bing to protect the land from sea monsters.

Ne Zha 2 follows the success of its predecessor, which made $725 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing animated film in China. The film is set to open in limited release in the US and Canada on February 14, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and other Oceania markets on February 13.
