‘Ne Zha 2’ Set to Become Highest-Grossing Animated Film

Chinese animation film Ne Zha 2 is on track to break all records as it surpasses Disney’s highest-grossing animated films. The film, which has been released in China for its 17th day, now holds the top spot with over $1.43 billion in Chinese box office gross. If projections hold true, it will reach a staggering $2 billion within the next few days.

Ne Zha 2 surpassed Disney’s previous record holder, Inside Out 2, to become the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film currently ranks behind three Disney animated films but is expected to dethrone them soon.

The English subtitled version of Ne Zha 2 opened in US theaters on February 14, earning $5.9 million in its first weekend. Early projections suggest it will land in fifth place over the President’s Day holiday period.

What makes Ne Zha 2’s achievement remarkable is that it will achieve this milestone solely from China, where it has grossed over $1.4 billion so far. The previous single-market record was held by an American film, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, but the Chinese market has set a new benchmark with Ne Zha 2.

This monumental feat highlights the growing importance of China’s box office in the global animation industry. As the only film to reach $1 billion in a single market, Ne Zha 2 is cementing its place in history as one of the most successful animated films of all time.
