China’s box office remains strong after the Lunar New Year holiday, with “Ne Zha 2” continuing its historic run. The animated epic earned $275.3 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $1.64 billion.
The film is rewriting record books for Imax, contributing $22 million to the platform’s weekend total and surpassing previous titles such as “Avengers: Endgame.” Globally, it has now reached $106 million in Imax earnings through Monday, becoming the 16th title to surpass $100 million in Imax gross box office.
“Ne Zha 2” is poised to overtake “The Lion King” to enter the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. It is currently the second-highest all-time animated grosser behind “Inside Out 2,” with a lifetime collection of $1.69 billion.
Other notable releases include “Detective Chinatown 1900,” which earned $26 million over the weekend, and “Captain America: Brave New World,” which opened in third place with $10.6 million. The film’s total earnings reached $22 million at Imax, marking a 21% increase from last weekend.
The Lunar New Year slate has set a new Imax record, with total earnings reaching $121 million through Sunday. China’s 2025 cumulative gross is now $2.77 billion, a 95.7% increase compared to the same period last year. The continued dominance of “Ne Zha 2” is keeping the momentum strong in China’s theatrical market.
