Nebraska Football Star Jack Hoffman Dies at 19 After 14-Year Battle with Cancer

Jack Hoffman, a young Nebraska football fan who inspired a nation with his courageous fight against brain cancer, died on Wednesday after a 14-year battle. The 19-year-old, who was diagnosed with a cancerous glioma at age five, had become a catalyst for pediatric brain cancer fundraising through the Team Jack Foundation.

Hoffman’s story began when he met Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead before his surgery in 2011. Burkhead’s words of inspiration helped rally the team, leading to a game-winning touchdown against Ohio State. Hoffman’s remarkable run on the field during the Cornhuskers’ spring game in 2013 garnered over 10 million views on YouTube.

Throughout his journey, Hoffman defied doctors’ predictions and underwent several surgeries, including a tumor resection surgery in summer 2024. Despite seizures and radiation treatments, he continued to fight and pursue his dreams. He began attending the University of Nebraska at Kearney this fall, where he earned a spot on the dean’s list.

The Team Jack Foundation, founded by Hoffman’s father Andy, has raised over $14 million for pediatric brain cancer research. Hoffman’s legacy extends beyond his football accomplishments, as he inspired countless people with his courage and determination.

“Jack was widely admired across Nebraska and beyond for his courageous spirit and dedication to raising awareness about childhood cancer,” the university stated in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jack’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.”
