Nebraska Reports 2 More Avian Flu Cases in Backyard Flocks

Nebraska has confirmed two more cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in backyard chicken flocks, bringing the total number of reported cases to five this year. The affected areas are Sarpy and Lancaster counties.

The latest cases were found in a small backyard flock in Sarpy County and a mixed backyard flock in Lancaster County. All but one of the recent cases have been reported since February, indicating an ongoing spread of the disease.

Symptoms of avian flu include birds showing signs of dehydration, weakness, or lethargy, decreased egg production, and soft-shelled eggs. Additionally, birds may exhibit nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, and diarrhea.

It’s worth noting that while migratory wild birds can carry the virus without getting sick, domestic backyard flocks are more susceptible to the disease.
