Nebraska Town Lures New Residents with $50k Down Payment Incentive

A small Nebraska city with less than 900 residents is attracting new faces with a unique incentive – $50,000 in down payment assistance to qualified buyers of newly built homes. Pawnee City’s “Vision 2030” plan aims to revitalize the town, which has seen its population dwindle over the past 50 years.

The program is open to families, single professionals, and retirees who meet certain income caps, with applications accepted until a limited number are filled. Qualified buyers will receive $50,000 towards their down payment on one of 25 new single-family homes priced at $325,000.

Pawnee City’s population has dwindled from its peak of 1,280 residents in the 1970s to just 865 today. However, the town still boasts a rich history and community spirit, with notable figures such as David Butler, Irish McCalla, and Larry the Cable Guy hailing from its past.

With remote work becoming increasingly popular, the opportunity to move to a smaller town with financial incentives is proving attractive in the current expensive housing market. The town’s new amenities, including an amphitheater that opened last year, are also drawing attention.
