A neo-Nazi terrorist organization known as The Base is planning a new paramilitary training event in the US, despite being dismantled by the FBI in a nationwide effort just years ago.
Founded in 2018 by a former Pentagon contractor living in Russia, The Base once had close to 50 members across the country. However, after a presidential election campaign, the group saw an opportunity to expand its ranks and has been growing ever since.
The Base has now gained a presence in Ukraine, where it performs sabotage operations against the government, and new cells are emerging across Europe. In the US, the FBI’s handling of far-right extremism has raised concerns, with some experts saying that the group is not being prioritized as a threat.
Online evidence shows The Base plans to hold a national gathering this summer, where members will train in paramilitary drills. The group solicited donations and claimed it aims to protect white people from “political persecution and physical destruction.”
Experts say The Base’s activities are becoming more serious and brazen, with the group calling for the murder of government officials and acts of sabotage. In Ukraine, the group has uploaded videos of attacks, including burning a military vehicle.
The Base’s leader, Rinaldo Nazzaro, recently released a video stating that his group is not just online but in the real world, using “propaganda through actions” to promote its ideology. The location of the upcoming training event remains unclear, but it is believed to be on land purchased by Nazzaro in the Pacific north-west.
