Nepal has seen a significant increase in the import of electric vehicles (EVs) for the fiscal year 2024/25, driven by low customs duty and rising environmental awareness. The country imported over 44,500 EVs, valued at Rs 43.99 billion, according to the Department of Customs.
The majority of these imports came from China, with a total of 16,505 units of electric three-wheelers brought in, followed by 13,578 units of cars and jeeps worth Rs 31.76 billion. Electric scooters and motorcycles also saw strong growth, with 11,319 units imported last year.
The government collected Rs 22.76 billion in revenue from the import of EVs, with passenger cars generating the largest share. The most popular mid-range models were those with motor capacities between 51-100 kilowatts.
Nepal’s growing preference for electric alternatives to fossil-fuel-powered vehicles is a significant shift towards sustainable mobility, driven by affordable and feature-packed EV models.
