Nestle has launched protein shots in the US market, targeting individuals taking weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy. The drink, called Boost Pre-Meal Hunger Support, claims to suppress appetite by mimicking an intestinal hormone called GLP-1, promoting a feeling of fullness.
The weekly shots contain 10 grams of whey protein, are fat-free, and have 45 calories with 1 gram of sugar. They are sold for $10.99 for a pack of four on Amazon.com and at some CVS stores. Nestle’s chief technology officer, Stefan Palzer, claims the product helps control hunger by increasing natural GLP-1 levels.
However, experts express skepticism about the long-term effectiveness of the protein shots. Lora Heisler, chair in human nutrition, says it is unclear if the shot can make a significant difference for people trying to lose weight. The market for obesity drugs is booming, with estimates suggesting it could be worth $150 billion annually by 2030.
Nestle’s product is not intended to replace weight loss drugs and is less powerful than them. It uses a mix of peptides that digest quickly, providing an amino acid spike that controls hunger. Results from a 2021 study involving 26 people with type-2 diabetes showed reduced glucose levels and a positive effect on GLP-1 hormone.
