Netanyahu Credits Trump for Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised President Donald Trump’s leadership in brokering a ceasefire deal with Hamas, just days before the Biden administration left office. During a joint press conference on Tuesday, Netanyahu lauded Trump’s role in the negotiations, saying he had “great force and powerful leadership” in bringing about the agreement.

The ceasefire was reached on January 15, following a meeting between Trump’s then-incoming Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Netanyahu. Biden claimed credit for the deal during his farewell address, but Netanyahu argued that chances of peace in the Middle East increase when Israel and the US work together.

Netanyahu said he would bring home the remaining hostages held by Hamas, while also vowing to end the group’s presence in Gaza. Trump echoed these sentiments, stating that Gaza is too dangerous for even soldiers to be present.

The deal follows a period of intense negotiation between the two sides, with Biden’s administration playing a significant role in laying out the plan. However, Netanyahu and Trump have emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between Israel and the US on issues such as Iran’s influence in the Middle East and resettling Gaza residents.
