Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit Hungary this week, despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over allegations of war crimes in Gaza. Netanyahu’s office confirmed the trip, which began on Wednesday and runs until Sunday.
The Hungarian government had invited Netanyahu in November, just days after the ICC announced the warrants. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has long been critical of the EU and its human rights standards, and he is believed to have ignored the ICC warrant.
Netanyahu’s visit marks his second trip abroad since the ICC issued the warrants, following a meeting with US President Donald Trump in February. Israel has denied the allegations against Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, describing them as “false and absurd”. The ICC has also issued a warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri.
Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary will be closely watched, given the country’s right-wing nationalist government and its strained relations with the EU.
