Netanyahu Slams Albanese as ‘Weak’ Over Palestine Recognition

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced criticism from his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, who called him a “weak politician” for recognizing a Palestinian state. The accusation came after the announcement that Australia’s formal recognition of Palestine will be made at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Netanyahu posted on social media that Albanese had “betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia’s Jews.” However, Albanese responded by saying he treats leaders with respect and engages diplomatically. He emphasized his desire to see an end to the cycle of violence in the region.

The tensions led to a series of tit-for-tat cancellations of Australian and Israeli visas. Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke further inflamed Israel’s anger by canceling the visa of far-right Israeli lawmaker Simcha Rothman, who planned to speak in Australia.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar retaliated by revoking visas of Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority. However, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong accused Netanyahu of isolating Israel.

The Jewish community in Australia is concerned about the deteriorating relations between the two countries. Alex Ryvchin, executive council CEO, stated that the community feels “profoundly disturbed and concerned” by the situation.

Australia’s recognition of Palestine has also sparked concerns among its conservative opposition party, which pledged to reverse the move if it wins the next election in 2028. The worsening bilateral relationship with Israel is affecting Australia’s relationship with the United States.
