Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese of “betraying” Israel and abandoning its Jewish community. The remarks come after a strained relationship between the two countries, with tensions escalating over recent events.
Netanyahu cancelled an Australian politician’s visa ahead of a visit to Australia, citing concerns over antisemitism in the country. In response, Israel revoked visas for Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority, citing recognition of a Palestinian state by Canberra.
Australia has announced its recognition of Palestine, which Netanyahu claims is “fueling” antisemitic attacks. The Israeli leader has also attacked leaders from the UK, France and Canada over their support for Palestine.
Netanyahu’s comments have been met with criticism from Australia’s opposition leader Yair Lapid, who says they are a gift to Albanese. Diplomatic tensions remain high between the two countries.
