Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu testified for four hours in Tel Aviv District Court, laying bare his disagreements with former US President Barack Obama over Iran and a Palestinian state. Netanyahu recalled a rocky relationship with Obama, who he said demanded the creation of a Palestinian state and imposed pressure on him to freeze construction.
Netanyahu also discussed his disagreement with then-Secretary of State John Kerry, who urged Israeli forces to withdraw from Judea and Samaria. The PM predicted that US policy in Afghanistan would not age well after Obama recommended visiting Afghanistan to see how American forces were training local forces.
The corruption trial stems from a 2019 indictment for alleged breach of trust, accepting bribes, and fraud. Netanyahu faces charges including accepting gifts from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and failing to report a bribery attempt from newspaper publisher Arnon Mozes.
Netanyahu denied allegations he asked for luxury items like champagne and cigars, calling them “absolute lies.” He argued that if he had been concerned about better media coverage, he could have just moved towards granting Palestinians statehood.
