Israel’s Supreme Court began a hearing on Tuesday into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bid to sack the head of the domestic intelligence service, amid protests and tensions. Netanyahu’s move to dismiss Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar was blocked by the court after it agreed to consider petitions against the decision.
Critics argue that the real reason for Bar’s dismissal is to block an investigation into possible ties between Netanyahu aides and Qatar. The timing of the move fueled mass demonstrations, with thousands of Israelis protesting against what they see as an attempt to undermine key state institutions.
The hearing focused on procedural issues, rather than wider strategic questions. A number of protesters were dragged out of the court after shouting at judges, while others remained outside shouting “For shame!” Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing and claims that Bar’s dismissal is a personal attack.
A recent police and Shin Bet investigation into Qatargate, an alleged influence-peddling campaign involving Netanyahu aides and Qatar, has added fuel to anti-government protests. The case has raised concerns about the erosion of Israeli democracy and the undermining of key state institutions.
The court will now focus on determining whether procedure was properly followed in Bar’s dismissal. It is unclear when a ruling will be issued, but the hearing highlights the deepening divisions between Netanyahu’s government and much of the defence establishment and justice system.
