Netflix Acquires TJ Hooker Rights, Eyes Action Comedy Reboot

Netflix has acquired the screen rights to 1980s cop drama TJ Hooker, with Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel set to write and produce an action comedy film. The duo, known for their work on Bert and Little Brother, will direct all episodes of the movie. Production will be handled by Sophie Cassidy, Matt Crespy, Adrian Askarieh, and Alex Westmore for 2.0 Entertainment, Prime Universe Films, and Vali Vista Films.

The original series, which aired from 1982 to 1986 on ABC and CBS, starred William Shatner as the principled and driven Sgt. T.J. Hooker. The show followed Hooker’s return to uniform after a divorce and the loss of his partner in the line of duty.

While it may seem out of place to turn a procedural drama into an action comedy, Hooker’s old-school crime-fighting style could lend itself well to the genre. Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel have expressed their enthusiasm for adapting the show, citing its potential for humor.

The film’s producers come from various backgrounds, including Rick Husky, who created the original series, and recent Netflix successes such as Bert and Little Brother. The duo has a proven track record in comedy writing and direction, making them well-suited to tackle this project.

As the reboot progresses, it will be interesting to see how the filmmakers balance Hooker’s tough-guy persona with comedic elements. With Paul and Mogel at the helm, fans of the original series may be in for a fun and unexpected ride.
