Netflix has announced its latest project based on Roald Dahl’s iconic creation, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The adaptation, titled “The Golden Ticket,” is a reality competition that takes cues from Netflix’s popular game show Squid Game. Contestants aged 18 and above will compete in a high-stakes social experiment to win a coveted golden ticket and enter Willy Wonka’s fantastical factory.
The show’s format is inspired by the original novel, where a group of lucky contestants must adapt and strategize to prove their instincts, resilience, and ability to thrive in a retro-futuristic dreamscape. However, unlike the original story, The Golden Ticket will not feature Oompa-Loompas or other beloved characters from the book.
The show is currently in the casting phase, with details scarce at this point. A press release on Netflix’s Tudum site promises a “huge prize” for the winners, but warns that the competition will be challenging and that contestants must be prepared to withstand games, tests, and temptations designed to test their abilities.
This new adaptation joins other recent Netflix projects based on Roald Dahl’s work, including Matilda the Musical and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. While Chalamet’s Wonka film pre-dated the Netflix deal, this latest project seems to take a darker turn by incorporating elements reminiscent of Squid Game.
