Netflix is now offering HDR movies and shows in the advanced HDR10+ format, exclusively for its premium subscribers. The streaming giant began supporting HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats in December 2014 with the release of Marco Polo’s first season. HDR10+, like Dolby Vision, uses dynamic metadata to fine-tune visuals on a frame-by-frame basis, allowing creators to achieve more detailed and accurate representations.
The new feature is particularly beneficial for lower-priced HDR TVs that may struggle with poor black levels and other performance issues. However, it requires an upgrade to Netflix’s Premium ad-free plan, which costs $25 per month compared to the Standard plan at $18.
In its latest blog post, Netflix revealed that 50% of all eligible viewing hours now feature AV1-HDR10+, a significant milestone in expanding its HDR10+ offerings. The streaming service aims to provide an HDR10+ experience for all available titles by the end of this year. Currently, Netflix boasts over 11,000 hours of HDR content.
