Netflix has signed a new deal with Archewell Productions, the production company behind Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle. However, the deal is significantly less extensive than their previous arrangement.
Under the original 2020 deal, Netflix paid Archewell for exclusive rights to content from their production company. The new first-look deal gives Netflix more flexibility, but also reduces its investment in projects.
Archewell has focused on producing documentaries and docuseries since signing with Netflix. Their notable productions include “Harry & Meghan,” a six-part series released in 2022, which garnered over 23 million views, and “With Love, Meghan,” a cooking show hosted by the Duchess that attracted over 5.3 million viewers.
Netflix has praised Archewell’s work, citing its inspirational content and the success of their shows. The streaming giant has seen positive response to Archewell’s projects, including the sale-out of products featured on “With Love, Meghan.”
The new deal marks a shift for Netflix as it scales back its all-encompassing deals. While some companies have performed well under these agreements, others haven’t met expectations.
Tensions between Netflix and Archewell have been reported, but both companies claim there is no tension between them. However, the news of Harry’s memoir release before the corresponding documentary series sparked controversy among Netflix executives.
Despite this, the new deal will see more content from Archewell, including a Christmas special for “With Love, Meghan” and season two of the show streaming later this month.
