Netflix Ditches Karla Sofía Gascón Amid Oscars Controversy

Netflix has distanced itself from Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, following a series of viral posts about Muslims and George Floyd that sparked outrage. The streaming service will no longer communicate directly with Gascón or cover her expenses related to travel and styling for awards shows.

The move comes after Gascón’s tweets from 2020 and 2021 surfaced online, making controversial comments about Islam, diversity at the Oscars, and George Floyd’s murder. Netflix has also removed Gascón from promotional materials, including email blasts, ad-reads, and billboards featuring her alongside co-stars.

Gascón had initially claimed to have been subject to “cancel culture” during a CNN En Español interview, but it was later revealed that she did not have the approval of Netflix for the appearance. The actress had also deleted her social media account after making the original posts, citing a desire to stop being affected by “hate and misinformation.”

The decision to drop Gascón from its Oscar campaign has been made as Netflix focuses on promoting Emilia Pérez ahead of the Academy Awards. Pérez was initially scheduled to attend several awards shows alongside Gascón, but her attendance is no longer expected.
