A new Netflix drama series called “The Waterfront” will soon be released on the streaming platform. The show, set in a small coastal town in North Carolina, features locations from the Wilmington area and Southport. The eight-episode first season is expected to drop on June 19.
The story follows the Buckley family, who run a fishing business and a restaurant in the fictional town of Havenport. However, by the time the show opens, the family has fallen on hard times and turned to illegal activities to maintain their empire.
Locations featured in the show include downtown Southport, Fort Fisher, downtown Wilmington, and Wrightsville Beach. The exterior and interior scenes for Fishy Fishy Cafe, Potter’s Seafood, and other locations were filmed in the area. Other notable locations included the International Longshoremen’s Local 1838 and William E. Poole Designs.
Creator Kevin Williamson, a native of New Bern, drew inspiration from his late father’s experiences when writing the show. Williamson has a long history in Southeastern North Carolina and will also serve as the showrunner for “The Waterfront.” The show’s release date and potential for a second season have yet to be confirmed.
