Amazon Fire TV devices from 2014 are no longer compatible with Netflix starting June 3, 2025. The first-generation models include the Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote. This decision is due to the old devices’ inability to support modern video codecs.
Netflix is moving away from these devices because they cannot play new standards like AV1, which offers better picture quality for customers on the Premium plan. The affected devices are not upgradeable to support newer codecs.
To keep streaming Netflix, owners of these models must upgrade to a current-generation device. Amazon typically discounts its Fire TV devices throughout the year, and it’s likely that prices will be reduced further following the Netflix announcement.
