Netflix Greenlights Live-Action Assassin’s Creed Series

After five years of development, Netflix has officially greenlit its live-action Assassin’s Creed series. The project will be led by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, previously showrunners on DMZ and Halo, respectively. The pair will serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers, alongside input from Ubisoft.

The series promises to explore the human side of the franchise, focusing on themes such as identity, destiny, faith, power, violence, sex, greed, and vengeance. According to Patino and Wiener, the show is about human connection across cultures and time, and what we stand to lose as a species when those connections break.

Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series, Peter Friedlander, stated that the team has crafted an epic adventure that honors the Assassin’s Creed franchise while inviting new fans to experience it. The announcement comes after a series of changes in the project, including the departure and arrival of various creatives.

This live-action adaptation is not the first attempt at bringing the franchise to life on screen. A 2016 Michael Fassbender-starring movie received mixed reviews, but Ubisoft has since reflected on lessons learned from that experience.

With multiple Assassin’s Creed projects in development, including a feudal Japan-set expansion and an Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remaster, fans are eagerly awaiting more information about Netflix’s series. A release date is currently unknown, but the project appears to be moving forward.

The announcement marks a significant step towards bringing the rich world of Assassin’s Creed to life on screen in bold new ways.
