The National Football League (NFL) will make history by airing two games on Netflix for the first time, with “NFL Christmas Gameday” set to begin on Wednesday. The games will feature Pittsburgh hosting Kansas City and Baltimore facing Houston.
Netflix has agreed to a three-year contract to carry Christmas Day games, marking the first time one outlet has distributed an NFL game globally. The streaming giant’s 282.3 million subscribers in over 190 countries will be able to stream the games in five languages – English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.
The games are part of the NFL’s efforts to expand its reach through streaming platforms, with Thursday night games already on Amazon Prime Video. Netflix is also expected to carry at least one game each year for the next two seasons.
The NFL’s decision to air Christmas Day games on a Wednesday follows last year’s successful three-game event, which averaged 28.68 million viewers. The early afternoon contest between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chiefs led the way, with an average of 29.48 million viewers.
