Just six weeks ago, “Emilia Pérez” made history by securing 13 Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón became the first openly trans actor to be nominated and was seen as a contender to win Best Picture.
However, the film’s momentum was short-lived. After derogatory comments from Gascón resurfaced on social media, “Emilia Pérez” only managed to secure two Oscars: one for best supporting actress and another for best original song (“El Mal”).
The film’s controversy was a punchline during Conan O’Brien’s opening monologue, where he joked about the number of times the F-word was used in the movie. Gascón faced pointed questions from journalists, including a Mexican journalist who told her that “Emilia Pérez” was “really hurtful for us Mexicans.”
Despite its lackluster performance, Netflix still proudly displays its Oscar wins at its headquarters, but none of them are for Best Picture. The film’s defeat is a blow to the streaming giant and its competitors, who have long resented Netflix’s resistance to theatrical releases.
In a speech, Sean Baker rallied support for moviegoing experiences during the ceremony. Meanwhile, Gascón kept a low profile, only briefly interacting with the press before being whisked away by her publicist.
