New AirTag Expected to Launch Next Year With Longer Range and Upgraded Technology

Apple is planning to release a second-generation AirTag next year with improved item tracking capabilities. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new AirTag will use Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, offering up to three times the range of its predecessor. This means the new model could potentially track items up to 60 meters (around 200 feet) away.

The updated AirTag is expected to feature a more durable built-in speaker, designed as a stalking-related safety measure. Gurman does not expect any major design changes for the accessory when it’s released next year.

There will be a four-year wait between the release of the first-generation AirTag in April 2021 and the second-generation model next year. The new technology will likely bring significant improvements to item tracking capabilities, making it easier for users to locate misplaced items.
