New Blue Water Spring Found at Yellowstone

A new blue water spring has been discovered at Yellowstone National Park’s Norris Geyser Basin, forming after a series of “mildly explosive events” between December 2024 and February 2025. According to the US Geological Survey, satellite images indicate that the pool formed as a result of hydrothermal explosions.

The spring is located about 13 feet in diameter and 1 foot below the rim, with water temperatures reaching 109°F. Geologists found evidence of rocks covered in light-gray, sandy mud and exposed layers, which are indicative of the explosive events that created the spring.

Due to extreme water temperatures, swimming in Yellowstone’s hot springs is prohibited by the National Park Service to protect visitors and the park’s thermal environments.
