New COVID-19 Variant Causes Sore Throat with Sharp Pain

A new variant of COVID-19 has emerged in the US and is causing a painful sore throat that feels like “razor blades.” This subvariant, known as Nimbus, makes up about a third of current cases and is more likely to cause throat problems than earlier forms.

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, says that even before this variant, COVID patients often experienced sore throats. “Sore throat has been reported in up to 70% of patients with COVID, and it can be severe,” he notes.

The reason for the severity is believed to be that as the virus evolves, our immune system’s response also changes. The new variant, Nimbus, binds more strongly to ACE2 receptors on cells in the upper airway, leading to inflammation and fluid buildup.

Symptoms of a sore throat are not caused by the virus itself but by the body’s reaction to it. Treatment options include anti-inflammatory drugs, numbing agents, and warm or cold liquids. However, doctors warn against using antibiotics or steroids for treatment, as they can have negative side effects.

To manage symptoms, take an at-home COVID test, ask your doctor about antiviral medication if you’re positive, and watch for worsening symptoms that may indicate a bacterial infection or abscess. If you experience severe throat pain or other concerning signs, seek medical attention immediately.
