New COVID Variant Causes ‘Razor Blade Throat’: How to Protect Yourself

A new variant of COVID-19, known as Nimbus strain (NB.1.8.1), is spreading widely in the US, particularly in 26 states including Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas. The virus was first spotted in March 2025 and has caused a sore throat often described as sharp or painful, also known as “razor blade throat.” While it doesn’t appear to cause more serious illness, the CDC warns that immunity is wearing off.

To protect yourself from this new strain, experts recommend:

– Getting boosted: If you’ve had your last dose over six months ago, get a booster immediately.
– Wearing masks in crowded places with poor air circulation.
– Testing and isolating if symptoms show up or after exposure to COVID-19.
– Improving indoor airflow using air purifiers.
– Washing hands frequently with sanitizer.

Dr. Scott Roberts, an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, advises: “The same tools that worked before will still work: handwashing, avoiding people who are sick, good ventilation, getting vaccinated, and masking in high-risk settings.”
