New COVID Variant ‘Stratus’ Spreads Across US, NY Experiences Low Positivity Rates

A new strain of the COVID-19 virus, known as “Stratus,” has been identified in Southeast Asia and is now contributing to rising cases across the United States. The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed XFG, the official name for the Stratus variant, on its watchlist but considers it a low public health risk.

Despite this, COVID-19 cases are increasing nationwide, with an 8.5% positivity rate reported in the CDC’s latest data for the week ending August 2. New York and surrounding areas, however, have seen some of the lowest COVID positivity rates in the country, with only 5.4% positive tests in HHS Region 2.

The Stratus variant shares similar symptoms with other COVID-19 variants but has been reported to cause hoarseness in some patients. Existing vaccines remain effective against this strain, according to the WHO.

As the US continues to experience a rise in cases, it’s essential to be aware of the current symptoms and when to seek medical attention. Common COVID-19 symptoms include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, congestion, and loss of taste or smell. In severe cases, patients may require emergency medical help due to trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, pale or blue skin, lips, or nail beds.

New York residents can take comfort in knowing that their state’s low positivity rates indicate a strong control of the virus. However, it’s crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and follow proper health guidelines to prevent further spread.
