New DOOM Captcha Tests Human Verification

Vercel CEO Builds DOOM-Style Captcha that Requires Three Enemy Kills to Prove Humanity

A new captcha has been created by Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, requiring users to defeat three enemies in Nightmare mode from the popular game DOOM. The captcha is built as a WebAssembly app and offers nostalgic fun while proving that the user is human. However, it may frustrate non-gamers due to its reliance on hand-eye coordination.

To pass the challenge, users can employ techniques such as strafing and using the spacebar to fire their weapon. By default, users start with 50 ammo, 0% armor, and 100% health, but this can be improved by learning effective strategies. The captcha is designed to end once three kills are achieved, eliminating the need for repeated attempts.

While the DOOM captcha may not be an effective tool for weeding out advanced AI bots, it could potentially stop crawlers from accessing a page. Its potential as a human verification method raises questions about its effectiveness in distinguishing between genuine users and automated systems.
