Newly appointed Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded during the opening day of an Israeli and US attack on Iran. Despite being the supreme leader, he has remained out of view since his succession three days ago. Concerns over revealing his location may have contributed to his absence from public appearances, but it’s also clear that he suffered injuries, including leg wounds. The extent of his injuries is still unclear.
Khamenei, 56, was a power player in the shadows for years, coordinating security and military affairs for his father’s office. His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in Israeli airstrikes on February 28, along with several top officials. The new supreme leader’s mother, wife, son, and many others were also killed.
References to Khamenei’s condition have appeared on state television and news outlets, calling him a “wounded war veteran.” However, details about his injuries remain scarce. Iranian officials believe he was not present when Israeli fighter jets attacked the remaining structure of his office compound on February 28.
