A number of parks in New Jersey are closed until further notice due to a bird flu outbreak. Dead Canadian geese found at Dr. Farmer’s Park, the millpond, Pete Sensi Park, and Heritage Park have tested positive for bird flu. Officials warn visitors not to touch dead birds or their feces, as they can transmit the disease. Fishing is also prohibited until the parks are deemed safe.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has confirmed that all geese found infected with the disease were from these four parks. The mayor of Allentown said the town spent thousands of dollars to professionally remove the carcasses, which were either buried or incinerated at a specialty facility.
Residents and visitors are advised to call Borough Hall at 609-259-3151 if they spot a dead bird, so it can be removed promptly. Mayor Thomas Fritts stated that the disease is transmitted through the droppings of infected birds, not only affecting humans but also pets.
