New Mexico Measles Outbreak Declared in Lea County

A measles outbreak has been declared in southeastern New Mexico’s Lea County, according to the state Department of Health (DOH). Three cases have been confirmed, all among adults. The DOH is investigating every suspected case and urges individuals with symptoms consistent with measles to seek medical care immediately.

Measles is a highly contagious and serious disease, with nearly one in five unvaccinated people who contract it being hospitalized. To prevent further spread, the DOH recommends that those not vaccinated against measles receive the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine as soon as possible.

Free vaccination clinics will be held in Lea County over the next two weeks at various locations. Those unsure about their vaccination status can check their records online or contact the NMHealth Helpline for assistance.
