Nintendo’s requirement of microSD Express for its Switch 2 console has brought new life to the standard, but a Chinese company called Biwin is pushing it even further. Biwin has developed the “Mini SSD,” a tiny card that supports read speeds of up to 3,700MB per second due to its two-lane PCI Express 4.0 interface.
The current microSD Express standard can support similar peak speeds, but most cards only reach around 900MB per second. Biwin’s Mini SSD achieves this by using LGA packaging to fit NAND chips and an SSD controller onto the card. The card is small enough to be inserted into a metal tray, making it suitable for insertion into systems like a SIM card.
Several gaming devices, including the AMD-based GPD Win 5 and OneXPlayer Super X, are now advertising support for Biwin’s Mini SD cards, which will come in capacities ranging from 500GB to 2TB.
