A devastating terrorist attack on New Orleans’ French Quarter left 14 people dead and dozens injured in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The victims, mostly young adults from diverse backgrounds, were drawn to the city by its lively atmosphere and popular spots like Bourbon Street.
Among the victims was Elliot Wilkinson, a 40-year-old man who had recently found an apartment after being homeless. He was killed along with 13 others, all of whom died from blunt force injuries according to a city release. The Metropolitan Police in London identified one victim as Edward Pettifer, a 31-year-old British citizen.
The victims included friends and family members, some of whom were still in college or new jobs. They had planned to celebrate the New Year together or enjoy popular activities like watching fireworks or attending concerts.
President Biden is planning to visit the city on Monday to meet with families of the victims and others affected by the attack. The investigation into the incident continues to unfold as authorities release more information about the perpetrator and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
