New Research Suggests Venus Never Had Oceans

Three astronomers from the University of Cambridge have poured cold water on the idea that Venus once hosted oceans on its surface, instead concluding that the planet’s interior has been dry for most of its history.

The researchers used the current atmosphere of Venus to probe the planet’s past, analyzing chemical reactions between the air and surface. They found that the volcanic gases released by Venus are at most 6% water, implying the planet’s interior is too dry to have ever brought large quantities of water to the surface.

This finding contradicts two rival theories about Venus’ past: one suggesting widespread oceans and another proposing that the planet was always too hot to support liquid water. The researchers argue that their unique approach, based on observations of current atmospheric chemistry, provides a more accurate picture of Venus’ history.

However, not everyone is convinced by the new calculations. Some experts have questioned the team’s assumptions about surface weathering and the sulfur cycle, which could affect the accuracy of their results. Further research, including future missions to Venus, may be needed to settle the debate once and for all.

The study highlights the importance of exploring Venus, as it offers a unique opportunity to investigate a planet that evolved differently than Earth, right at the edge of the habitable zone.
