The US Social Security Administration (SSA) is introducing stronger identity verification procedures to enhance the security of its services. Starting April 14, 2025, individuals unable to use their personal my Social Security account will need in-person identity proofing for certain benefits, such as Retirement, Survivors, and Auxiliary benefits.
Those applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can complete their claim over the phone without a visit. However, those seeking Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary benefits will need to prove their identity at an SSA office or use online digital identity proofing. In extreme dire-need situations, such as terminal cases or prisoner pre-release scenarios, the agency will not enforce these requirements.
Additionally, individuals unable to apply online for direct deposit changes must visit a Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment. The SSA is also expanding its payment integrity service, Account Verification Service (AVS), to prevent fraud associated with direct deposit change requests.
It’s essential for those without a my Social Security account to create one before applying for benefits. The agency will continue to balance program integrity with customer service, ensuring that the right person receives the right benefit at the right time.
Note: This new policy applies only to new applications and updating personal information, including changing direct deposit bank accounts. Existing recipients of SS retirement benefits do not need to take any action.
