New Study Links Frequent Marijuana Use to Impaired Working Memory

A new study published in *JAMA Network Open* suggests that frequent marijuana use may impair working memory. Working memory is essential for tasks like remembering grocery lists or changing lanes while driving. The research found that individuals with heavy lifetime cannabis use showed lower brain activation during a working memory task, potentially linking marijuana use to cognitive decline.

The study, involving over 1,000 participants, revealed that 63% of heavy users exhibited this impairment. However, the lead author noted that it remains unclear whether brain activity returns to normal after quitting marijuana for extended periods.
