Researchers have developed a revolutionary implant that combines a tiny AI-powered computer with augmented reality glasses. The system uses infrared signals to transmit data from the chip implanted between the lens and retina, allowing patients to regain reading-level vision.
A clinical study involving 38 patients across 17 medical institutions found that 84% of participants could read again after months of training using the prosthetic vision system. This is a major breakthrough in treating dry age-related macular degeneration, with many patients seeing significant improvements.
The implant, called PRIMA (photovoltaic retina implant microarray), requires surgery to be inserted beneath the central retina.
