Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in American men, claiming about one in 44 lives. A new urine-based test, MyProstateScore2.0 (MPS2), has been shown to be effective in detecting aggressive prostate cancer even without a painful digital rectal exam.
The test, developed by researchers at the University of Michigan, screens for 18 genes associated with aggressive prostate cancer and can distinguish between slow-growing and more aggressive forms of the disease. The new study found that MPS2 was accurate in detecting 94% of aggressive prostate cancer cases.
The test has significant implications for early detection and potentially avoiding painful biopsies. The University of Michigan is now offering information on the test to eligible individuals through its Cancer AnswerLine.
