New US Vaccine Guidelines May Limit Free Shots for Healthy Americans

A federal vaccine advisory panel has voted to recommend that people consult a clinician before getting a coronavirus shot, shifting from previous recommendations for free shots for all Americans ages 6 months and older.

The change creates confusion for Americans who are used to getting free vaccines without having to justify it. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends vaccines under “shared clinical decision-making,” meaning people should first consult a medical professional before receiving the shot.

While some experts argue that this new approach will improve patient safety and education, others worry about access barriers for those who cannot easily get vaccinated without an appointment.

The move comes as pharmaceutical companies have faced criticism for making misleading claims about vaccine risks. Some Americans are already facing challenges getting coronavirus vaccines due to state requirements or pharmacy restrictions.

However, major health insurance groups and the CDC say that free access to coronavirus vaccines will continue for most Americans, with public health insurers covering costs through 2026.
