A backyard poultry flock in Madison County has tested positive for avian flu, prompting officials to euthanize the birds to prevent further spread. The outbreak is part of a larger epidemic affecting over 150 million birds nationwide since 2022.
The affected flock consists of around 15 ducks and geese, with limited contact between owners and the birds. Owners will be monitored for symptoms for 10 days after their last possible exposure.
This year alone, Onondaga County has reported six confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian flu (HPAI). New York is among 13 states experiencing large-scale culling due to HPAI outbreaks.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation has launched a website for reporting suspected HPAI outbreaks in wild birds. People are advised to limit contact with dead wildlife and keep domestic animals away from carcasses.
If you suspect an outbreak, report it on the DEC’s website or contact local authorities.
