Two residents of Queens have tested positive for West Nile Virus, marking the city’s first human cases this season, according to the NYC Health Department. The department is also investigating reports of potential cases in Brooklyn.
The virus, which can be fatal in some cases, especially among the elderly and immunocompromised, has been detected in mosquitoes across all five boroughs since July. Health officials are warning New Yorkers to take precautions during peak season (August-September), such as using repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that people over 70 have a mortality rate of about 20%, while those under 50 have a rate of just 2%. The department is urging residents with weakened immune systems to avoid going outdoors during peak hours altogether.
One confirmed case has been discharged from the hospital, while another remains hospitalized with brain inflammation. The city has treated over 988 positive mosquito pools since August 22 and will continue to use spray operations to control infected populations.
Residents are advised to contact their healthcare provider if they suspect they may have contracted the virus.
