New York Rangers Name Mike Sullivan as Head Coach

New York Rangers President Chris Drury announced today that Mike Sullivan has been named the 38th head coach in franchise history. Drury praised Sullivan’s numerous accomplishments, including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level.

“I’ve gotten to know Mike very well over the years,” said Drury. “He brings a championship-level presence behind the bench.”

Sullivan will take on this new role after previously serving as head coach of the Boston Bruins (2003-04 – 2005-06) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2015-16 – 2024-25). During his tenure with the Penguins, he led the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Sullivan’s coaching record stands at 479-311-15-112. He is also the only American-born head coach in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup multiple times.

Internationally, Sullivan has coached Team USA in several tournaments, including the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics.

Sullivan will be joined by James L. Dolan, MSG Executive Chairman and CEO, who welcomed him back to the Rangers organization. “Mike’s track record and success in the NHL and internationally speaks for itself,” said Dolan.
