New York is gearing up to welcome the new year with a slew of laws aimed at protecting consumers, improving public health and safety, and promoting workers’ rights. The state’s legislative agenda includes several key measures, including:
* Requiring retailers to display labels on over-the-counter medications and cosmetics
* Mandating diaper manufacturers to disclose ingredients on their packaging
* Establishing strict temperature limits in schools to prevent heat-related illnesses
* Expanding protections against domestic violence by allowing courts to issue orders of protection to family members
* Requiring charter buses to install seat belts for passengers aged 8-16
In addition, New York state will begin automatically returning unclaimed funds of up to $250 to individuals and organizations who lost track of money turned over as abandoned property. The state’s Comptroller’s Office will establish an expedited payment program to streamline the process.
These laws are designed to address a range of issues affecting New Yorkers, from consumer safety and public health to workers’ rights and community well-being. As the state looks to strengthen its regulatory framework in 2025, it is clear that consumer protection will be at the forefront of the agenda.
