The next generation of artificial intelligence systems will be able to perform tasks on their own without human input. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, this is made possible by models like o1, which enables agent-based AI.
Altman describes the new reasoning models as “level 3” AI, capable of working through a problem before presenting a solution. This will unlock entirely new opportunities with AI that were previously impossible with the GPT class of models.
The big change with AI is that these new models can reason across problems, allowing for complex decision-making. Altman emphasizes that this advancement is comparable to the significance of the GPT- series and will lead to breakthroughs in areas like healthcare, education, and scientific discovery.
OpenAI’s o1 model is an entirely new class of large language model that moves away from token-by-token responses. Instead, it uses a chain-of-thought concept where the AI works through the problem step by step before presenting an answer.
Altman believes that these reasoning models will have a significant impact in areas like personalized tutoring and scientific discovery. He envisions a future where agentic experiences enabled by this technology will be profoundly impactful.
The first full version of o1 is expected to arrive soon, with o2 and next-generation versions in the coming years. What remains unclear is whether the “o” family of models will become the agents or if there will be another paradigm shift similar to the change from GPT to o1.
