Apple is reportedly working on a new generation of its Apple TV 4K set-top box, which will include a custom-designed Wi-Fi chip made by the company itself. The new chip will replace Broadcom’s current design and will initially be used in both the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini.
The custom chip will enable faster internet connectivity and improved Bluetooth functionality for the devices. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, this technology will allow Apple’s smart home devices to work more seamlessly together and potentially sync data more quickly.
Other features that have been rumored for the next-gen Apple TV include an upgraded processor, such as the A17 Pro, and a lower price point compared to the current 64GB model. There has also been speculation about a built-in camera for gesture controls, but this remains unconfirmed.
The new Wi-Fi chip will also make its way into other Apple devices, including the iPhone in 2025 and the iPad and Mac in 2026. This marks a significant step forward for Apple’s push into the smart home market, with new products launching next year, including a home hub with a built-in display and a home security camera.
While there are risks associated with developing custom components, Gurman believes that this technology will enable thinner iPhones and wearable devices, potentially benefiting future models such as the rumored iPhone 17 Air.
