New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo was fired on Sunday after one season, leaving the team with a 4-13 record. Mayo’s tenure ended abruptly, and he has been blamed by owner Robert Kraft for putting him in an “untenable situation”.
Meanwhile, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson was also let go despite having assembled what owner Shad Khan called the franchise’s “best team assembled” just last year. Pederson went 23-30 with the Jaguars during his tenure, a far cry from the Super Bowl-winning coach Khan thought he hired in February 2021.
However, not every team that had a rough year decided to change directions. The New York Giants announced on Monday that they’re keeping coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen despite a 3-14 record this season. The Indianapolis Colts are also sticking with their current regime, while the Miami Dolphins will keep coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier.
The coaching movement might not be over yet, as teams like the Dallas Cowboys continue to mull their next move following a 7-10 season that put coach Mike McCarthy on the hot seat. Three NFL coaches were fired during the regular season, including Chicago’s Matt Eberflus, New Orleans’ Dennis Allen, and the New York Jets’ Robert Saleh.
The Jaguars’ loss will be felt by many, as Christian Kirk expressed his respect for Pederson despite the disappointing season. “It’s unfortunate because at the end of the day we all had a hand in it,” Kirk said. “I have a ton of respect for Doug… He’s made me a better football player, better man.”
As teams move forward into 2025, one thing is clear: coaching stability will be crucial to success in the NFL.
